HYUNDAI ASSAN: SOUTH KOREA’S GATEWAY TO EUROPE
Hyundai Motor Company, which is established in 1967 and leaping fast forward in recent years, is drawing attention as the most progressing brand in automotive business with its global operations. Besides the world’s largest integrated auto manufacturing plant in South Korea-Ulsan, Hyundai produces vehicles in strategic countries; Turkey, USA, China, India, Czech Republic and Russia, and all the vehicles are sold in almost 200 countries around the world.
Turkey has a very important place for Hyundai Motor Company and strategically positioned Hyundai Assan Plant is the most considerable link between South Korea and Europe.
Turkish customers first met the Hyundai brand in 1990. After a short period, negotiations were made to produce Hyundai branded vehicles in Turkey and by taking the government’s approval in 1993 December, working on a new plant had started. The groundbreaking was done in 26th of September 1995 and the plant was completed in a record-breaking 15 months time. Hyundai Turkey Plant started production in July 1997 and the official opening ceremony was realized on the 20th of September, 1997. The plant in Izmit - Ali Kahya region has 1 million square meters plot of land, 233.000 square meters of factory site and 108.000 square meters of production site.
The plant, which was built with an initial investment of 180 million USD, has 125.000 units annual production capacity. The hi-tech plant currently produces i20 and Accent passenger car models and acts as Hyundai Motor Company’s gateway to Europe. The employment of Hyundai in Turkey is around 1.700 people now. The first models produced at the plant were Accent and H100 (1997). Starex was added to the line-up in 2002 together with the start of exports to the region. The plant was the sole producer of Matrix model between 2007 and 2010.
The plant has Press, Body, Paint, Trim and Engine lines. Accent has 1.4 liter and 1.6 liter CVVT gasoline engines and 1.5 liter CRDi-VGT common-rail diesel engine. In May 2010, production for the i20 model has begun at the plant by increasing the volume to 80,000 units on yearly basis.
Hyundai i20 has 1.2 and 1.4 liter gasoline and, 1.4 liter diesel engine options. It is exported to all European countries only from Turkey. Together with Accent, Hyundai Assan has been exporting cars to more than 60 countries in the world.
By 2009, Hyundai Plant has produced its 500.000th vehicle. The plant manufactures 22 vehicles average in an hour and the daily production reaches around 400 units. Hyundai’s i10, i30, i30CW, ix20, Sonata, Genesis, Genesis Coupe passenger cars, ix35, Santa Fe and ix55 SUVs, as well as H-1 and H-100 Light Truck commercial vehicles are imported.
Hyundai has 72 authorized dealers and 82 authorized services over 50 cities throughout Turkey.
Hyundai Assan Production Quality
Hyundai İzmit Plant is fully equipped with state-of-the-art automotive technology and it has been recently chosen as “The Best Production Quality Plant” among all Hyundai factories all over the world. The ISO 9001 Quality Assurance and ISO 14001 Environmental Management certificated plant targets to manufacture the best production quality vehicles in the world. Hyundai is the first brand that offers 5 Years / 100,000 km Mechanical Warranty to all of its models in Turkey as of 2004. Hyundai is also the first and only brand which all its dealers throughout Turkey have received ISO 9001 Quality Standard Certificates.
Hyundai’s Sales Success in Turkey
Hyundai has been one of the best demanded vehicles in Turkey and it has also become “Turkey’s Best-Selling Automobile Brand” with the sales and over 16% of market share achieved in 2009. Turkish-built Accent also became “Turkey’s Most Preferred Vehicle” in 2009. Hyundai continues to take place in top 3 as of 2011.

As the biggest sponsor of football in the world, Hyundai was the global official sponsor to UEFA Euro 2000, Euro 2004 and Euro 2008 European Football Championships, as well as FIFA 2002, 2006 and 2010 World Cup events. After the agreement with FIFA, Hyundai will continue to be the official partner of every FIFA and UEFA event until the year 2022.
