Range-Extended Electric Vehicle Drives Anywhere, Any Time

Practical: Electric car with five doors, four seats and a trunk for luggage
Zero range-anxiety: Total extended range of more than 500 km
On target: Production to start 2011

The Opel Ampera electric vehicle with extended-range capability will be the first electrically driven car in Europe suitable for everyday driving. With its unique electric propulsion system providing lively acceleration and high levels of refinement, the five-door Ampera seats four passengers, offers ample trunk space and features an extended range of more than 500 kilometers.

The Ampera is powered by electricity at all times and speeds. For trips up to 60 km, power is supplied by the electricity stored in the 16-kWh, lithium-ion battery. While driving on electricity delivered by the battery, the Ampera emits zero CO2. When the battery runs low, the gasoline-fueled engine seamlessly extends the total driving range to more than 500 kilometers on a full tank. The battery is recharged (in about three hours at 230 V) by plugging the vehicle's on-board charge system into a standard household outlet. Unlike a conventional battery-electric vehicle, the Ampera eliminates range anxiety. It gives drivers the confidence and peace of mind that a depleted battery will not strand them.

The 288 lithium-ion cells in the T-shaped battery pack provide ample power. The nearly silent electric drive unit delivers 370 Nm of instant torque, the equivalent of
150 horsepower, zero to 100 km/h acceleration in around nine seconds, and a top speed of 161 km/h.

The Opel Ampera is an electric vehicle which combines pure electric drive and a range-extending engine, giving more than 500 km total range. The main components of the propulsion system include a T-shaped battery pack, a 111 kW electric drive unit, and a 1.4-liter gasoline engine.

The Opel Ampera represents a significant departure from hybrids. It is an electrically-driven vehicle designed and engineered to operate in all climates. On short trips up to 60 km, it will run on battery power alone. On longer trips, a 1.4-liter gasoline engine extends the range for up to around 500 km by operating the vehicle’s electric drive system until the car can be plugged in and recharged or refueled.

How the Ampera Works
Energy is stored on board in a 16-kWh, “T”-shaped lithium-ion battery pack. The battery pack supplies energy to the electric drive unit, which is capable of meeting full vehicle speed and acceleration performance while driving the car electrically for up to 60 km (MVEG cycle) without using a drop of gasoline. On longer trips, power from the Ampera’s on-board range-extending engine inverts power to the electric drive unit to provide up to around 500 km of additional driving range.

Benefits
An electric vehicle with range extended capability has many benefits, including energy diversification, reduced oil consumption, reduced emissions, and zero range anxiety. Opel estimates that Ampera drivers will save about 1700 liters of gasoline based on 60 km of daily driving (compared to a similar-sized vehicle with an average fuel consumption of around 7.8 l/100 km).
