- Two Norwegians use standard Ford Mondeo ECOnetic Technology wagon to travel 2,161 kilometers (1343 miles) on a single tank of fuel (70 litres of diesel)
- The journey took them from Murmansk, Russia, to Uddevalla, north of Gothenburg, Sweden, via Oslo in Norway, before they ran out of fuel
- The Ford Mondeo ECOnetic Technology, equipped with a 115PS 1.6-litre diesel engine, achieved an average fuel consumption of 3.2 litres per 100 kilometers (88.3mpg)
COLOGNE, Germany, Sept. 29, 2011 – Norwegian hypermiling duo Knut Wilthil and Henrik Borchgervink traveled 2,161.5 kilometers on a single 70-litre tank of fuel in their Ford Mondeo ECOnetic Technology wagon.
Setting out from Murmansk in Russia, the 1.6-litre diesel Mondeo travelled for 40 hours before finally running out of fuel in Uddevalla, a town north of the Swedish city of Gothenburg. The two-man team drove a standard Mondeo ECOnetic Technology on the journey, achieving a fuel consumption of 3.2 litres per 100 kilometers (88.3 mpg), 1.1 litre or more than 25 percent better than the officially stated fuel consumption of 4.3 litres per 100 kilometers (66mpg)*.
“Considering the rough road conditions that we faced in the early part of the journey in Russia, with large stones, deep potholes and one steep hill after another, followed by 1,000 kilometers of soaking wet roads and strong headwinds through Finland and Sweden, the fuel consumption figure is even more impressive,” Henrik said.
Mondeo ECOnetic Technology uses the latest low-CO2 technologies in its powertrain, aerodynamics and driver information system, such as Auto-Start-Stop, Smart Regenerative Charging, Active Grille Shutter, Ford ECO Mode, Gearshift Indicator and a longer final drive. It also makes use of low-friction engine and transmission oils, low rolling resistance tyres and lower suspension.
All of this helps the Mondeo ECOnetic Technology to not only record attractive fuel consumption figures, but also achieve a CO2 figure of just 114g/km, which is an important tax break point for many European countries.
** Fuel economy figures quoted are in line with the European Fuel Economy Directive EU 80/1268/EEC and will differ from fuel economy drive cycle results in other regions of the world.
